Outing Updates

Got brass?

That was the attitude over the West Point weekend, which was enjoyed by almost everybody.  Brass was flying out in almost every direction.  But that’s not why we, 16 excited scouts and 7 enthusiastic adults from Troop 1158, drove 360 miles to West Point’s Camp Natural Bridge for (hopefully).  We came to the 48th West Point Scoutmaster’s Council Camporee to have fun, to camp, to tour the campus, and to have more fun.  We definitely did.

Outing Updates

March 16, 2010

Well, we Ravens had a very eventful weekend.  On the days of March 13 and March 14, we endured a rainy night.  Rain poured and poured, and sleeping suddenly became somewhat hard.  Plus, the rain canceled any plans of a good campfire.

Fortunately for us, those were the only low points!  We got to camp around 2:30 and set off on a hike through the woods.  On the way, we used flashy landmarks to help us navigate around.  We encountered a herd of deer early on, so we tracked them all over the forest.  Along the way, we encountered a hip bone.  It looked like a predatory animal had eaten the meat off of it.  Soon, we were lead to an area near a creek, which housed two golf balls.  (Needless to say, they magically disappeared once we left.  How odd…)  We then discovered the skeleton of a large seven-point buck.  Strangely, its hip bone was missing.  (I wonder where it could be…)  After exiting the forest, we made DINNER!  It was a delicious stew with chicken, beans, peas, carrots, and fresh forest leeks (which were hand-picked by Simitri).  After a game and many random songs, we finally fell asleep.

The next day was also interesting.  Breakfast was cold because we couldn’t get the stove to light in the rain.  We ventured back into the forest to collect the antlers of the seven-point buck.  (We had thought it would be an eight or ten-point buck.)  After collecting the antlers, we headed back to camp and packed up.  As we were leaving, our attention was captured by donuts, coffee, and flying birds.  We found a tree that had many woodpecker holes (the wood pecker saves trees from worms!), and Mr. King told us lots about the bird.

Hats off to Max Reynolds, for being the leader of this great campout!  Mr. Gugino and Mr. Sheshadri did a great job at supervising the campout.  They had everything under control and taught us many valuable things.  Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to have dinner!  Mr. King brought delicious donuts / coffee and information about the redhead woodpecker.  Mr. Chen helped with the setting up and packing up of the camp.  And the rest of the scouts made contributions to the success of this campout.  Thanks to all!

No regrets for this campout!  Let’s hope that all of the following campouts are just as good as this one!
